Saint Eustachius in Art

Wednesday 28 September at 7.15 pm

Local art historian Dr Geri Parlby will be giving an illustrated talk on the representations of the Saint Eustachius in art.  Said to have been a Roman soldier in the third century, stories of St Eustachius’ conversion to Christianity and brutal martyrdom are shrouded in myth.  His legendary life and death has inspired artists from the 10th to the 20th centuries and Dr Parlby will be taking audiences on an artistic  journey featuring stone, ivory and wood carving, stained glass windows, woodcuts,  panel paintings, icons, monumental frescoes and manuscript illuminations.

Come and enjoy an evening of artistic enlightenment followed by wine and nibbles in the beautiful surroundings of Tavistock’s very own St Eustachius' church, one of only three churches in England dedicated to this most enigmatic saint.

All proceeds will go to the Friends of St Eustachius'.
